성탄의 기쁨 / 마가복음 12:41-44

     예수께서 제자들을 곁에 불러 놓고서, 그들에게 말씀하셨다. “내가 진정으로 너희에게 말한다. 헌금함에 돈을 넣은 사람들 가운데, 이 가난한 과부가 어느 누구보다도 더 많이 넣었다. - 마가복음 12:4

     저는 여러 해 동안 구세군에서 봉사했는데, 우리 동네에 있는 식품점 앞에서 조그마한 종을 흔들며 모금을 했습니다. 어떤 겨울날은 너무 추워서 종을 흔드는 일이 어렵기도 했고 싫기도 했지만, 그래도 동전을 넣는 사람들의 얼굴들을 보며 보람을 느꼈습니다. 작년 성탄절 즈음에, 어느 늙은 부인은 모금함 옆에 서서, 오랫동안 지갑에서 동전을 찾았습니다. 저에게는 그 부인이 오히려 경제적인 도움을 받아야 할 것처럼 보였습니다. 마침내 동전을 찾은 부인은 얼마 되지 않는 돈을 모금함에 넣었습니다. 그러나 예수님이 과부와 그의 동전에 대한 이야기에서 말씀하신 것처럼 마음에서 우러나오는 희생적인 헌금이었다는 것이 중요했습니다.
     구세군에서 종을 흔들며 모금하는 경험을 통해서, 저는 가장 많이 드린 사람들이 가장 가난해 보이는 사람들이라는 것을 종종 목격했습니다. 드리는 것에 대한 기쁨이 그들의 밝은 표정에 나타납니다. 그러나 제가 가장 기억나는 것은 부모님에게 받은 동전을 모금함에 넣는 어린이들입니다. 제가 “메리 크리스마스”하고 말하면 그들은 아름다운 미소를 짓습니다. 네, 그렇습니다. 그 양이 아무리 작아도 준다는 것은 우리의 표정을 환하게 하고 우리의 영혼을 치솟게 합니다.

기도 하나님, 하나님은 우리에게 기꺼이 드리는 사람이 되라고 하십니다. 우리의 헌금이 다른 사람에게 기쁨을 주게 하여주십시오. 예수님의 이름으로 기도합니다. 아멘.

A Christmas Joy / Read Mark 12:41-44

[Jesus]called his disciples and said to them, "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury."- Mark 12:43 (NRSV)

For many years one of my Christmas joys has been helping The Salvation Army by manning one of their kettle stations and ringing a little hand-bell in front of a local-grocery-chain store. Some days the winter cold made the bell ringing challenging and unpleasant, but the faces of the coin-droppers made it all worthwhile. Last Christmas season a dear elderly lady stood near the kettle searching a long time in her purse for some elusive coins. She appeared as if she were the one who needed financial help. Finally, she beamed with success as she deposited her rather meager offering. As Jesus noted in his story of the widow and her penny, it was the sacrificial giving from the heart that mattered.
Often during my Salvation Army bell-ringing experience, I noticed that the people who gave the most often were ones who seemed to be the poorest and their beaming countenance reflected their gift. But the ones I remember the most are the children who deposited coins given to them by a parent. When they heard the words "Merry Christmas"they flashed the most wonderful smiles. Yes, giving however small the amount can bring us a bright face and a soaring spirit.

O God, we know you ask us to be cheerful givers. We pray our humble gifts bring joy to others. Amen.
